Machu Picchu, Peru


Machu Picchu ("Old mountain") is a pre-Columbian Inca site

 

We took the train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu

 

Machu Picchu is located 2,400 meters (7,875 ft) above sea level

 

It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 km northwest of Cusco

 

It is often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas" Huayna Picchu is the famous peak

 

Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire

 

It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned a hundred years later

 

Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham

 

It was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983

 

It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World

 

Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls

 

Temple of the Sun

 

As Peru’s most visited tourist attraction, it is threatened by economic and commercial forces

 

The Intihuatana stone is arranged so it points directly at the sun during the winter solstice

 

UNESCO is considering putting Machu Picchu on its list of endangered World Heritage Sites

 

The Incas were among the best stone masons the world has seen

 

Huayna Picchu is a mountain around which the Urubamba River bends. It rises over Machu Picchu
